Metro & buses

Porto Metro covers the city and airport. STCP buses fill gaps in the urban network. Both accept the Andante rechargeable card for seamless transfers.

How to pay

Use the Andante card for metro and buses in Porto. Buy CP train tickets online, at ticket offices, or at station machines. Alfa Pendular and IC trains require advance booking.

Where to go

From Porto you can reach Braga, Viana do Castelo, Guimarães, Aveiro, and the Spanish border by train — plus the entire coast by metro or regional rail.

01 — Know the system

Porto Metro

Porto Metro (Metro do Porto) operates six lines connecting the city centre with suburbs, the airport, coastal towns, and Gaia. It is the fastest way to reach Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport from central Porto.

Line A — Blue (Azul)

Senhor de Matosinhos ↔ Estádio do Dragão. Coastal route serving Matosinhos and northern Porto.

Good for: beach, northern suburbs

Line B — Red (Vermelho)

Póvoa de Varzim ↔ Estádio do Dragão. Northern coastal towns and commuter belt.

Good for: Póvoa de Varzim, Vila do Conde

Line C — Green (Verde)

ISMAI ↔ Campanhã. Serves eastern suburbs and connects to the main rail hub at Campanhã.

Good for: Maia, east Porto

Line D — Yellow (Amarela)

Hospital S. João ↔ General Torres (Gaia). Crosses the Dom Luís I bridge — great city views.

Good for: Gaia, bridge crossing

Line E — Violet (Violeta)

Aeroporto ↔ Estádio do Dragão. Airport line. Fast and frequent.

Good for: airport transfers

Line F — Orange (Laranja)

Fânzeres ↔ Salgueiros. Southeast corridor through Gondomar.

Good for: Gondomar, southeast suburbs

Andante card: Load credit or a zone pass onto the Andante card at any metro station. One card works across metro, STCP buses, and some CP urban trains in the Porto area. Validate every time you board — even when transferring.

STCP — Porto City Buses

STCP (Sociedade de Transportes Colectivos do Porto) operates bus routes throughout Porto and neighboring municipalities. Buses reach areas not served by the metro, including the historic Ribeira waterfront, Foz do Douro, and hillside neighborhoods.

Check the route number and final destination displayed on the front of the bus before boarding.
Board at the front door and validate your Andante card on the reader, or buy a single-trip ticket from the driver (costs more than using Andante).
Signal your stop by pressing the button before your destination. Buses do not stop automatically at every stop.
Night buses (marked M) run on reduced schedules after midnight on weekends. Check STCP's app for live times.

Traveler tip: The Andante card gives you 60 minutes of transfers across metro and bus within your purchased zone. Plan multi-leg trips to get the most from a single validation.

CP Train Types Serving Porto

CP operates six service categories. Knowing the difference prevents buying the wrong ticket or missing a reservation requirement.

SUB Suburbano (Urban)

Short-hop commuter trains within the Porto metropolitan area. Frequent, no seat reservation, cheapest fares.

Best for: daily commutes, short city-to-city hops

R Regional

Slower trains stopping at many stations. Connect smaller towns across the north including Viana do Castelo, Barcelos, and Braga. No reservation required.

Best for: scenic trips, smaller towns, flexible schedules

IR InterRegional

Faster than Regional with fewer stops. Cover longer corridors — Porto to Coimbra, Porto to Vigo (Spain).

Best for: mid-distance trips, cross-region travel

IC InterCidades (Intercities)

Comfortable express service between major cities. Porto ↔ Lisbon is a common IC route. Seat reservation required.

Best for: Porto–Lisbon, longer intercity journeys

AP Alfa Pendular

Portugal's premium high-speed tilting train. Porto ↔ Lisbon in under 3 hours. Seat reservation mandatory — buy in advance.

Best for: Porto–Lisbon fast connection, business travel

INT International

Cross-border services from Porto Campanhã to Vigo and beyond in Spain. Passport or EU ID required.

Best for: Porto–Vigo, onward to Spain

02 — Plan the route

Key routes from Porto

Use the CP app or cp.pt journey planner to confirm departure stations, times, and train types before you travel. Note that Porto has two main train stations — São Bento serves shorter routes; Campanhã handles all long-distance and most regional services.

Porto → Braga

~50 min by SUB or R train from Porto Campanhã or São Bento. Frequent service, no reservation needed.

Train type: SUB / R

Porto → Guimarães

~1 hr from Porto Campanhã via the Guimarães line. Change at Nine if coming from São Bento.

Train type: R

Porto → Viana do Castelo

~1.5 hrs along the scenic Lima river valley. Regional train, limited frequency — check timetables ahead of time.

Train type: R

Porto → Aveiro

~1 hr. Frequent urban and regional services. Aveiro is popular for its canals and Art Nouveau architecture.

Train type: SUB / R / IR

Porto → Lisbon

~2 h 45 min (AP) or ~3.5 hrs (IC). Book ahead, especially on weekends and holidays.

Train type: AP / IC

Porto → Vigo (Spain)

~2 hrs international service. Passport required. Book via CP or Renfe in advance.

Train type: INT

Useful apps: CP app (train schedules and tickets), Metro do Porto app (metro map and live times), STCP app (bus routes and live arrivals).

03 — Buy correctly

How to purchase tickets

Metro & STCP buses: Get an Andante card at any metro station (small deposit required). Load zones or credit at the machine. Validate every time you board.
SUB and R trains: Buy at station ticket machines, CP ticket offices, or online at cp.pt. No advance reservation needed.
IR trains: Buy online or at the station. Reservation not always mandatory but recommended during peak periods.
IC and AP trains: Always reserve a seat. Buy online at cp.pt for the best price — walk-up fares cost more. Print or save your ticket on your phone.
International trains: Book via cp.pt or renfe.com. Bring your passport or EU national ID card.

Discounts: CP offers youth (under 25), senior (65+), family, and group discounts. Confirm eligibility and required documentation before traveling.

04 — Ride with confidence

What to know before you board

Do

Validate your Andante card every time you board metro or bus, even during a transfer.
Check whether your CP train departs from São Bento or Campanhã — major stations with different lines.
Book IC and AP tickets at least a few days ahead, especially on holiday weekends.
Carry your passport or EU ID for international trains.
Download the CP and Metro do Porto apps for live schedules and disruption alerts.

Don't

Forget to validate — inspectors board regularly and fines are significant.
Assume Regional trains run every hour — some routes have large gaps, especially evenings.
Confuse Porto São Bento (city-centre terminus) with Porto Campanhã (main intercity hub). Long-distance trains use Campanhã.
Buy Andante zones for less than your actual journey — you must cover all zones you travel through.
Leave international ticket booking to the day of travel — seats sell out.
